Any tips on starting out?

Hey, just wondering how everyone got to a high level. I just made a sorc and im not sure what skills i should get. Im currently level 25 on act 3.

I cant even kill the high council in act 3 and i just constantly die lol. Should I be leveling or should i like mf for some gear? could anyone recommend where to lvl or mf

Act 3 does seem to be where the game gets hard. Believe it or not even the lowest level uniques give quite a boost in power, and monster levels have been modified so bosses such as andariel can drop a little more than they used to. I would try to mix leveling and mfing in tombs in act 2, it shouldn't be long before you can do act 3.
