Am I Making a Mistake By

As a first character? Perhaps. Bow zon with mavinas is cheap, if not free to make and provides you with the ability to solo/party kill hell cows for blue organs/HRs to trade...

My friend is making a Bowzon, but I assume I won't be able to solo play as efficiently then..

I recently started too man, about a month. I started with a bowazon from the wiki. Your potential to kill hell cows solo is unreal when you start using mavinas set. After a couple of weeks of farming you will have ample 'currency' to trade for necro gear. You and your friend could clear cows twice as fast and even pool together your items and boom!

We've just been playing through ourselves, already about level 40 in A5 Norm. Is there a faster way for me to make a Zon and catch up to him?

Get someone to spectate rush you through hell and sit in cows for 5 min. You'll be level 70 before you come back from making tea.

How easy is it to get Mav's set? Is it a common drop or something?

it's common. This community will give it to you for free if you ask. I have a couple peices, but I won't be on till later.
