from the patch notes:
The 3 special Inferno zones found throughout Act 5 in the red portals now have all new Inferno difficulty monsters. They can drop anything in the game, along with a new yet rare drop, the Infernal Chest (Hell Mode only).

Dated patch notes, there have been releases since that topic!
Just like what Rez said, when Inferno came out they could drop anything. They cannot anything that relates to a specific area or boss though.
